Public Rental Board Officially Opens PRB Transportation Hub
April 24, 2026The official opening of 16 new Public Rental Board (PRB) flats at the Lagilagi Housing Estate in Jittu Estate, Raiwaqa, by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka marks another important step in Fiji’s commitment to providing safe, affordable and dignified housing for its people. This occasion is not merely the commissioning of a new housing development; it is a celebration of progress, partnership and the shared aspiration for a better quality of life for Fijian families.
Housing remains one of the most pressing social and economic challenges facing Fiji. For many families, access to secure and affordable accommodation is the foundation upon which opportunities in education, employment and community development are built. The addition of these 16 new flats reinforces the principle that every Fijian deserves the opportunity to live in a safe and supportive environment.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Prime Minister Rabuka aptly captured the significance of the development when he stated:
“Every new home represents dignity, security, and opportunity.”
Those words resonate deeply with the purpose of the Lagilagi project. A home is more than a roof over one’s head. It is a place where families are strengthened, children can focus on their education, and communities can flourish.
The Prime Minister further emphasized that:
“By providing safe, affordable, and quality housing, Government is creating an enabling environment where families can thrive, where children can pursue their education in stable surroundings, and where communities can contribute more effectively to Fiji’s social and economic development.”
This vision reflects a broader national commitment to inclusive development—one that places people at the centre of progress.
Local media highlighted the significance of the project in advancing the Government’s housing agenda. The Fiji Times reported that the opening represents “the reaffirmation of the Government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for our people through inclusive people-centred development.” Similarly, Fiji Village noted that the development demonstrates the Government’s ongoing efforts to work collaboratively with traditional landowners and stakeholders to address housing demand in the rapidly growing Suva–Nausori corridor.
The success of Lagilagi would not have been possible without the collective efforts of numerous stakeholders. The Prime Minister himself acknowledged the role of traditional landowners, stating:
“It’s not just the great work that has been done, it’s also the willingness of the traditional landowners to allow their land to be used for our resettlement from the villages and the rural areas.”
Such partnerships demonstrate the uniquely Fijian values of cooperation, respect and community stewardship that continue to underpin national development.
As Fiji confronts rising construction costs, urbanisation pressures, climate-related challenges and housing shortages, developments such as Lagilagi serve as practical examples of how these challenges can be addressed through commitment and collaboration. The Government’s allocation of $25.6 million to housing initiatives in the 2026–2027 National Budget further signals a continued investment in housing accessibility and sustainable communities.
Importantly, the Prime Minister reminded future residents that successful communities depend not only on infrastructure but also on shared responsibility:
“The good houses, the affordable houses, whether they become safe homes depends on you.”
This message underscores that the true success of any housing project is measured not just by the buildings constructed, but by the communities that grow within them.
Today, as families receive the keys to their new homes, we celebrate more than the completion of 16 flats. We celebrate new beginnings, renewed hope and the promise of a brighter future. The Lagilagi Housing Estate stands as a testament to what can be achieved when government, communities, traditional landowners and development partners work together towards a common goal.
As Fiji continues its journey towards inclusive and sustainable development, may the opening of these new PRB flats inspire further initiatives that ensure every Fijian family has access to the dignity, security and opportunity that a safe home provides.
